QUICK FACTS
The German Fraunhofer-Institute fur Graphische
Datenverarbeitung has created a data visualization system, VISMAR.
This system was created using PV-WAVE and is used for the effective
visualization of marine environmental data. These graphical representations
are used to support the interpretation of data and for quickly viewing
environmental data from different origins and data formats.
THE PROBLEM
At the Fraunhofer-Institute fur Graphische Datenverarbeitung in
Rostock, Germany, developers have created the VISMAR-Marine environmental
data visualization system using PV-WAVE. VISMAR is an interactive
system created for marine environmental data visualization in a
geographical context. It is implemented as an open and extensible
system for UNIX® workstations.
THE SOLUTION
VISMAR provides three main functions: interactive design and production
of maps of any sea region in the world; marine environmental data
visualization in a geographical context, using different kinds of
2D and 3D scientific visualization methods; and import of the environmental
data in different data-exchange formats for future analysis by this
system.
The methods of scientific visualization offered by VISMAR enable
the graphical-supported analysis of marine environmental data for
administrative as well as scientific purposes. The graphical user
interface of the system allows intuitive use, and a context-sensitive
help system with hypertext facilities that supports the users work
is also included.
During the monitoring and research of marine ecological systems,
a large amount of data of different structures is measured. Graphical
representations, which show the characteristics of the data as well
as their arrangement in the geographical context, are used to support
the interpretation of data. The goal of VISMAR is to support the
fast visualization of marine environmental data from different origins
and data formats.
RETURN
ON INVESTMENT
VISMAR provides the capability of converting marine data from usual
formats to the system's internal data format. According to the characteristics
of the selected data, a window is opened that enables the user to
select parts of data for visualization.
VISMAR offers the opportunity to save the
activities of an analysis session as PV-WAVE procedures. Saved procedures
can be used to automate routine analysis activities and to produce
metafiles for different hard copy devices, such as PostScript, CGM,
and HPGL.
WORLD CLASS PRODUCTS, SERVICES,
AND SUPPORT
Visual Numerics has provided technical software
solutions for numerical analysis and visualization for over 30 years.
The company's software products help users understand complex data
from a variety of sources and build business-critical applications.
Visual Numerics offers two product lines: the IMSL® Numerical
Libraries for powerful mathematical and statistical analysis and
the PV-WAVE® visual data analysis development environment. Visual
Numerics also offers customized consulting services for applications
that involve mathematical, statistical, or visual data analysis
to meet today’s business analytical needs.
The IMSL Numerical Libraries which include
the IMSL C Library, IMSL Fortran Library and JMSL Library
for Java applications are the industry standard for numerical
analysis. They deliver developers with the breadth and depth of
core algorithms allowing for the rapid development of any application.
Whether developing applications in C, Fortran, or Java, or on UNIX,
Windows or Linux, the robust IMSL Libraries provide the reliable
foundation and the building blocks developers need.
The PV-WAVE family of products which includes
PV-WAVE, TS-WAVE, and JWAVE delivers engineers with the development
tools to efficiently and accurately meet their data analysis needs.
PV-WAVE solutions allow users to rapidly import, manipulate, analyze
and visualize data. The PV-WAVE family also includes robust time
series analysis software as well as the ability to share analysis
results across the enterprise with a Java-based solution. And, unlike
other products, PV-WAVE Advantage includes a sophisticated set of
analysis routines based on the industry-standard IMSL Libraries.

Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (IGD) in Darmstadt
focuses on the development of product prototypes and the realization
of concepts, models, and solutions for computer graphics and its
adaptation to specific application requirements. The work is rounded
off by object-oriented basic research projects and the realization
of single devices and computer graphics systems.
